Art of marbling (so called Ebru in Turkish) has a tradition like every art type. Marbling may only continue to develop and live if its own corresponding tradition will be carried in a specific, desired manner to reflect mystic beauties, elements, values of Turkish culture.
First of all, an individual can be considered as a real marbling artist in the beginner level if he or she already made and applied different type of marbling techniques according to the rules and regulations of Turkish marbling culture. Marbling is being practiced by the masters who are capable to achieve different types of marbling (flower, classical etc…) and who have been trained in the basis of master-apprentice relationship, following special instructions to perform the desired marbling type. It is extremely too important not to push the colors during the work, not to separate the pushed colors in the marbling surface. Another important criteria is that; When the paper is been put through the work, and about to taken away or insulated from the surface (so called tray; made by galvanized steel; sizes of the tray are dependent on the sizes of the paper to be marbled), there mustn’t be any default in any of the regions of marbling paper.
Ebru is a kind of special nonfigurative, none-repetitive art. Once you started to make marbling, it is impossible to return back to the initial position of the work due to the nature of the art. It can not be done by looking at an object, needs high amount of thinking, motivation and concentration. Marbling is a special kind of mystic dream, like a tool for regeneration and creation of secret thinkings, opinions which can not be exposed in our minds. This may only be discovered if the marbler may integrate all of his attention, secret love into his tray. It is like fall in love to a nonexistence object, creating and living with valentine in your dreams. Main objective is to search for the most beautiful and valuable marbling all the time. Most beautiful one is the first one in general according to our way of thinking; we are also living our first marbling foundations together with our traditions. According to my opinion; the most valuable work is to search for the first made, undiscovered marbling style by the help our tradition, not to search the new’s in the first’s ones. According to Mr. Apaslan Babaoglu’s (one of the marbling expert) approach; ‘‘Main aim must be; to make and try much more better marblings compared with Ethem Efendi, Necmettin Okyay and Mustafa Duzgunman (the names of well known marbling artists), to feel in the same way that they feel, to treat the objects in a similar way that they did during the initiation and observation process of marbling ’’ is completely a true opinion. I would say the people who are trying to make different type of marbling figures in the same way that Mustafa Düzgünman made by the name of innovation is just to degenerate our art.
